Family Photo Outfit Guide

Gearing up for family photos is so exciting! You might be thinking of all the gorgeous images you’ll soon have and where you want to place them in your home. You might be thinking of the different poses your photographer will have you do, and the scenery you’ll be posing in front of. Another thing that might be on your mind is what you’re going to wear! There are so many things to consider – how many family members there will be, what season is it, where are you taking photos, etc.  Being a Kalamazoo family photographer, I know it can be a difficult task to coordinate an entire family’s outfits, so we’ve created a guide. Keep reading to find out the best color combinations and clothing pieces to use when dressing for family photos in a variety of seasons and settings.

Fall

Fall is such a beautiful time to take photos! The leaves are gorgeous, the air is crisp, and the ambiance has that “pre-winter” feel to it. Fall time makes for some beautiful family photos! When coordinating for fall, naturally, you think of fall colors. Shades of burgundy, green, and orange make for beautiful color combinations when taking photos! Sage, clay, and neutrals are also great colors to lean toward when coordinating family photo outfits. Long dresses or a gorgeous sweater could be great for mom, while dad might find a handsome sweater or button up for himself. Again, work to coordinate your color palette across the family!

Summer and Beach

Summer is such a great season. The weather is warm, the sun is shining, and people are taking family photos! But what do you wear for your summer family photos? The summertime is perfect for beautiful, airy family photos. Gorgeous, light flowy dresses are a great clothing piece to incorporate in your family photos. Summer is also great for soft floral designs and pastel colors. Think light and airy, such as pastel blues, greens, blushes, and again, neutrals.

Tips and Tricks

Now that we’ve talked color combinations that are gorgeous for both fall and summer, I’d like to provide you some overall advice when choosing your outfits. First, when planning your outfits, it’s best to coordinate color combinations, rather than matching. Another thing to take into consideration that you may not have thought of is your home décor. Try to pick clothing that will look gorgeous on display in your home! Last, consider your location in addition to the season when choosing your outfits and find color combinations that look great in your location.

Ready, Set, Go

Now that you’ve figured out the best color combinations and tips to choose your family outfits let’s get to shopping and coordinating! This can be so fun, especially when you’ve gotten great advice on how to plan the best family photo outfits.
