Beach Outfit Guide
We are so excited you booked us for your family photography! I am sure you are also looking forward to this session. You might be thinking of all the gorgeous images you’ll have and where you want to display the wall portraits in your home. Another thing that might be on your mind is what you’re going to wear! This is the most asked question we receive from families and happy to help!
There are so many things to consider – how many family members there will be, what season is it, where are you taking photos, etc. I know it can be a difficult task to coordinate an entire family’s outfits, so we have some tried and true suggestions below..
Many families I’ve photographed have chosen the color scheme of blues and tans. Others have thrown in purple, teal, mauve, coral and orange. As you can see in these photos, they each have different color combinations. Depending on which style you prefer, the blues, tans and teals will mimic the beach and water which will make for a more fluid muted photo overall. Colors such as orange and purple can scare some, however orange is a complimentary color of blue, and purples and mauves are a complementary color of greens and yellows.

Tips and Tricks
Now that we’ve talked color combinations that are gorgeous for both fall and summer, I’d like to provide you some overall advice when choosing your outfits.
- When planning your outfits, it’s best to coordinate color combinations, rather than matching. Matching can look dated and not nearly has interesting as coordinating outfits can. Pick two or three colors and have everyone work together with those colors.
- Stay away from bold patterns, logos or graphics. Solid colors are very complimentary and less distracting. We want the focus to be on you and your family, not the pattern or graphic on someone’s shirt.
- Don’t worry about shoes, we suggest you all be barefoot.
- Think about your home décor. Try to pick clothing that will look gorgeous on display in your home! You want to have that gorgeous wall portrait blending in beautifully with the decor of your home.
- A tip from a professional photographer is for girls and women to wear something flowy, it tends to add movement to the photo and looks beautiful with the background of the beach 🙂
- One thing I’ve learned over the years: it’s always smart for families to pack towels and an extra set of clothes—because let’s be honest, the kids will see water and they will get wet!
