Kalamazoo Newborn Photographer Safety Tips

Newborn photographers have one of the greatest jobs ever – taking beautiful photos of sweet, sleeping newborns! It’s not exactly as simple as that sounds, however. Newborn safety is a number on priority when photographing your precious baby. There are many different things photographers can do to keep newborns safe during their photo session. Kalamazoo Newborn Photographer, Gregersen Photography, makes a priority to follow newborn safety practices and we’d love to share some of them with you! Keep reading to find out ways to keep newborns safe during their session!

Communication

Making a commitment to keep a newborn safe during their session is a commitment to the precious newborn baby’s parents. A great thing to do during baby’s session is to communicate with the parents what you are doing as you pose and move the sweet, sleeping baby. This gives the parents a sense of comfort knowing you are taking their little one’s safety seriously. Communicating with mom and dad while you’re navigating the session also keeps them involved in the photo session and ultimately sets us up for a successful session with beautiful images.

Monitor Baby’s Comfort

While photographing the sweet baby it’s important to be aware of the little one’s comfort throughout the session. This ensures that the newborn is warm, happy, comfortable, and safe. If baby becomes uncomfortable or upset allow mom or dad to soothe them before continuing the session. You can use this a great chance to get some sweet family photos. By monitoring the newborn throughout the session, you can help create the most successful newborn session possible and gorgeous images!

Wash Your Hands!

This is a rule that many parents have for their little ones when seeing family. The same goes for the sweet baby’s newborn photographer! You can also keep some hand sanitizer close by so you can always be prepared and stay clean.

Keep a Spotter Near By

Having extra hands nearby is important when posing newborns. Newborns can be unpredictable, and stronger than you think! If you don’t have your own assistant, having mom or dad nearby as your photographing their sweet newborn will help to ensure baby’s safety.

Don’t Overfeed

Overfeeding your baby before the session so that they are in a “milk coma” can cause your baby to spit up more than usual, have gas, and could change their normal eating pattern later in the day. This makes for an unhappy baby after the session. Elena Blair, previous NICU nurse, tells us that this technique can make for a very tired mom and dad even more tired later on.

Sibling Safety

Young siblings can be somewhat unpredictable, and safety should be considered when posing newborns with their siblings. It’s important to be aware of baby and sibling placement while posing. Again, use a spotter! Having someone ready can help to prevent any incidents while posing siblings. For siblings under two, laying down next to each other is a great way to promote safe posing!
